Introduction

Hi, that's me ...

Stefan Maetschke

I am a computer guy by education and inclination. I did my masters at the University of applied Computer Science in Wuerzburg, Germany and went then out to work in Research and Development at Siemens in Nuernberg and Erlangen, Germany.

My focus during that time was on robotics, signal processing and machine learning methods applied to problems in the manufacturing industry. After ten years I moved to a small company in Germany and was developing software for speech processing and data mining when a friend pushed me into a PhD.

That friend was from Australia, so I made the big jump to the other side of the world and did my PhD at the University of Queensland in Brisbane with a topic in Bioinformatics. Currently, I am working as a Computational Biologist (with a big 'C' and a small 'b' I have to admit) at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience in Brisbane and as a Computer Scientist/Lecturer at the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering.

Currently, I am working on the inference of protein protein interaction networks utilizing machine learning techniques. Apart from lecturing Advanced Software Engineering and Programming in the Large in Java, I am also developing a web application to assess the diagnostic skills of medical students.

In my spare time, I either train various types of martial arts (www.budopoint.de) or implement some software.
